Qualification overview

Part of the Qualsafe Awards (QA) First Aid suite of qualifications, the qualification and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of:

  • The Resuscitation Council (UK)
  • A distinguished panel of experts in emergency medical care

The training:

  • Prepares learners to safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and perform basic life support (BLS) interventions.
  • Outlines a range of knowledge and practical skills in providing BLS and using an AED safely. Learners will practise assessing and managing a casualty who needs BLS, and how to safely use an AED.

Course content

What’s covered?

The half-day course covers:

  • Assessing an emergency situation safely
  • Managing an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally (recovery position)
  • Managing an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally (cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR])
  • How to safely use an automated external defibrillator
  • Managing a post-resuscitation casualty

Who’s it for?

This qualification is for people who have a specific interest or responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, such as a first-aider, to provide BLS when dealing with an emergency situation that may involve using an AED.

Entry requirements

Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of the training and be able to perform practical tasks at floor level.

Requalification

This qualification is valid for 1 year. The learner must retake the qualification before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified.
