Course overview

This course is part of the Qualsafe Awards (QA) Pre-Hospital Care suite of qualifications. The qualification and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of:

  • The Resuscitation Council (UK)
  • The Assessment Principles for Regulated First Aid Qualifications
  • The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

The Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) is:

  • For people who work, or hope to work, as first response emergency care providers in various job sectors.
  • Based on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) training standard for delivery of first aid at work (FAW) courses for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

Learners will gain the confidence, knowledge and practical competencies needed to deal with a range of pre-hospital emergency care situations.

Course content

What’s covered?

The 5-day course covers:

  • The role and responsibilities of a first responder
  • Assessing an incident safely
  • Managing patients with life-threating and non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries
  • Assessing and managing a patient’s airway
  • Managing an unresponsive patient who isn't breathing normally
  • How to safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED) during a resuscitation attempt and how to maintain an AED ready for use
  • How to safely administer emergency oxygen
  • Assessing and managing trauma patients
  • Assessing and managing catastrophic bleeding
  • Assessing and managing chest injuries
  • Assessing and managing bleeding
  • Assessing and managing a patient with compromised circulation
  • Assessing and managing wounds and eye injuries
  • Assessing and managing a patient with burns or scalds
  • Managing a patient with sudden poisoning
  • How to provide emergency care to a patient with head, spinal and musculoskeletal injuries
  • How to identify a patient experiencing breathing difficulties
  • Managing a patient with anaphylaxis
  • Assessing and managing a patient with suspected major illness
  • Managing a patient who is actively convulsing
  • How to provide emergency care for the effects of environmental exposure

Who’s it for?

This qualification is for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide pre-hospital care to patients requiring emergency care/treatment. It's ideal for those looking to progress their careers in the emergency services, ambulance services or healthcare settings. And the course supports specialist medical roles within law enforcement and security, energy and utilities, construction and military.

Entry requirements

Learners must be at least 17 years old on the first day of the training and be able to perform practical tasks at floor level.

Requalification

This qualification is valid for 3 years. The learner must retake it before the certificate expiry date to stay qualified.
